The Brazilian Potato Project

Certification brings increased profitability from responsible production

How it all started

Thanks to close customer relations and a watchful eye for opportunities to help farmers, a Bayer sales representative spotted potato growers’ need to standardize production and gain certification in order to verify the deployment of good agricultural practices. Since 2009, Bayer’s Valore program has been helping farmers to implement good agricultural practices and achieve certification. In December 2013 this Valore program was introduced to the producer in question, João Emilio Rocheto, who promptly joined the program.

What we aimed to achieve

The aim of this Food Chain Partnership project is to help Rocheto maximize certification, implement traceability and ensure food safety. Ultimately, this enables the farmers to achieve GLOBALG.A.P. certification, as Valore is aligned with GLOBALG.A.P. Another important factor involves compliance with Brazilian social, environmental and labor legislation. The Valore program consists of a general protocol covering all this legislation and a more specific protocol for each crop that deals with good agricultural practices.

In addition, Bayer’s Valore program helps producers to implement a responsible production and sustainable business model, thus achieving market differentiation and gaining certification.
